24 Thanksgiving Prayers and Blessings to Read at Your Dinner Table

This simple scripture will help you put your gratitude into words.

Sharing a piece of scripture before enjoying a meal with friends and family is a powerful practice any time of year. But carrying out this Thanksgiving tradition holds greater meaning on November 24 as you combine communion over food with giving thanks. If you and your Thanksgiving guests follow the Jewish or Christian faith, you can share a Thanksgiving prayer, blessing, or Bible verse that discusses themes of gratitude and thankfulness. Regardless of which scripture you choose to read this year, these Thanksgiving sayings are an easy way to find the words to show how grateful you are to have everyone you love together sharing a meal.

When thinking of how to connect with God on Thanksgiving Day, you can have the little ones read aloud a Thanksgiving psalm, or you can choose a prayer or two that has the power to give strength to those Thanksgiving guests who may need it. Hearing the words of writers, rabbis, authors, theologians, and presidents can inspire a moment of peace and reflection among your guests before they enjoy their delicious homemade meal. Perhaps one of these Thanksgiving prayers will even become part of their daily prayer routine. Either way, even a singular Thanksgiving prayer establishes a necessary pause after all the prep work and before the ensuing mayhem over who gets the last drumstick or slice of pie.

We thank you for our senses by which we hear the songs of birds, and see the splendor of the summer fields, and taste of the autumn fruits, and rejoice in the feel of the snow, and smell the breath of the spring. Grant us a heart wide open to all this beauty, and save our souls from being so blind that we pass unseeing when even the common thornbush is aflame with your glory. Thanksgiving Prayer Poem

"Lord, so often times, as any other day, when we sit down to our meal and pray, we hurry along and make fast the blessing, thanks, amen, now please pass the dressing. We're slaves to the olfactory overload, we must rush our prayer before the food gets cold. But Lord, I'd like to take a few minutes more, to really give thanks to what I'm thankful for. For my family, my health, a nice soft bed. My friends, my freedom, a roof over my head. I'm thankful right now to be surrounded by those whose lives touch me more than they'll ever possibly know. Thankful Lord, that You've blessed me beyond measure. Thankful that in my heart lives life's greatest treasure. That You, dear Jesus, reside in that place and I'm ever so grateful for Your unending grace. So please, heavenly Father, bless this food You've provided, and bless each and every person invited. Amen!"

Supreme Lord of the harvest, graciously accept us and the fruits of our toil, in union with Jesus, your Son, as atonement for our sins, for the growth of your Church, for peace and love in our homes, and for salvation for all.
