12 Hanukkah Movies to Watch Because, Yes They Do Exist

As Adam Sandler once sang, "Put on your yarmulke, here comes Hanukkah." And you can celebrate with a cozy Hanukkah movie marathon.

There are hundreds of holiday movies about Christmas — and that's just counting the ones on the Hallmark Channel! Christmas movies are big business for the film industry, but Christmas is not the only wintertime holiday that people are celebrating. According to Elite Daily, a 2015 study found that one in 14 Americans celebrate Hanukkah. So there should be at least a proportional amount of Hanukkah movies to Christmas movies, right?

Well, there's not. Networks like the Hallmark Channel and Lifetime have tried to step up the representation, with three new Hanukkah movies hit people's TV screens in 2019. But overall, the representation is slim pickings. Some movies feature a scene or two about the Jewish holiday, and others delve more into the whole Hanukkah celebration, but the bottom line is there needs to be more movies in every genre (cheesy romance, children's, action, animated, etc.).

The world's millions of Jewish people deserve to see themselves and their traditions represented, just like Christians can watch roughly 800 different movies about a high-powered city woman coming back to her quaint hometown and falling in love with the local Christmas tree farmer.

'Eight Crazy Nights'

Adam Sandler was inspired by one of his own lyrics in "The Hanukkah Song" to write this movie. As the line goes, "Instead of one day of presents, we get eight crazy nights!" Don't be fooled by the animation, though. This isn't a kids' movie. It's rated PG-13, and Sandler voices an alcoholic criminal who needs to be reminded of the Miracle of Hanukkah to make amends with those he's wronged.

'The Holiday'

This movie should be called The Holidays, plural, because it covers everything from Christmas to New Year's, including Hanukkah. There's a scene in Kate Winslet's section of the film where she has a Hanukkah party with some of her elderly neighbors and Jack Black's character stops by. By and large, this movie is more about Christmas, but it was fun to see Hanukkah represented too.

Seven years after its first Hanukkah movie, the Hallmark Channel doubled down in 2019 with two Hanukkah films. But since Joel is Jewish, the family incorporates both holidays into their celebrating.

'An American Tail'

This film begins with a Hanukkah celebration where a young Russian-Jewish mouse named Fievel learns all about the great United States from his father. America is a place where there are supposedly no "cats" to attack them for simply being who they are. Of course, once Fievel goes to America, he learns that there are cats everywhere, but he perseveres.

It's an important analogy of the realities of anti-Jewish discrimination as told through a rated-G children's movie.
