The past year has been particularly difficult for working women and business owners, due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. An estimated 3 million women have been pushed out of the workforce as a result of the public health crisis and an unequal division of labor within the home. And even though women are more likely to own businesses in industries that have been hit hard by the pandemic, like restaurants and retail shops, than their male counterparts, a House committee report found the Paycheck Protection Program left behind many minority- and women-owned businesses.

While there will be no shortage of ink spilt detailing the value women have had in shaping this nation during Women's History Month, commemorating International Women's Day and honoring the contributions women have made over the years cannot simply begin and end with a celebratory Instagram post. If you really want to honor women this month, you can help support them financially by patronizing any one, or all, of the following woman-owned businesses.

From dairy-free ice cream to stunning jewelry collections, to private online communities and healthy meal subscription services, the following women have embraced the entrepreneurial spirit in a way that not only helped them realize their career goals, but also helps improve the communities around them. And as the country begins to rebuild from a pandemic that has killed over 500,000 Americans and left millions more unemployed, it would behoove us all to support the women who hold up our economy. After all, nearly 42% of businesses were owned by women in 2019, according to American Express’ State of Women-Owned Business report.

Check out the following woman-owned businesses and show your appreciation for all women do, day in and day out.

She Speaks Numbers

She Speaks Numbers, a consulting company founded by Liz Barhydt, offers executive training, digital courses, and business coaching to help finance and accounting professionals and business owners grow their influence by mastering the power of story to confidently communicate numbers to non-number people.

"I remember growing up hearing my parents fight through the thin walls of the bedroom my sister and I shared. What were they fighting about? Money. It was always about money," Barhydt tells Woman's Day. "My dad was an early stage entrepreneur and consistent cash flow well... wasn't consistent. Growing up this way, I never thought I'd want to own my business. My head knew it would not be easy. But my heart felt otherwise and I just always found myself drawn to entrepreneurship. The desire to build something out of passion, grit, and resilience with lots of risk but also huge rewards has always been more compelling for me. I started my business to create a life centered around the things we love most: God, family and adventure. And I love that I get to create this by helping others achieve big goals in their careers and business."
